A few hours with Grand Theft Auto IV

Grand Theft Auto IVImage via WikipediaI ordered a copy of GTA IV to see what all the fuss was about, and well, although I’m impressed with what the game has accomplished in terms of technical capabilities, it failed to capture my imagination.

The story begins with how the starring character (Nico) got to America. The introduction is smooth and feels like a movie. When it ends, you find yourself driving your cousin to his place and familiarizing yourself with the controls.

Having played Crackdown before, the whole free-roam experience is familiar to me, but slightly removed after having been playing Rainbow Six for the last month. Getting to Nico’s cousin’s house was a frustrating experience in stop and go driving… I eventually got the hang of it though later in the game.

After the first few missions I started mastering the whole movement thing, but at the same time started getting bored of the game. I felt coerced to do Roman’s (cousin) bidding to move on, even if the things he sent me to do were lame.

One one of these errands I was sent to pick up his female coworker and one of her female friends whom I ended up hitting it off with, and later asking her out on a date. We went bowling. Really weird. Bowling in a game that is not about bowling. Made Wii sports look lame.

Anyway, this review is staring to ramble as much as GTA IV feels story-wise. There just isn’t a point to it all. After a while I found myself ignoring Roman’s requests and seeing how fast I could drive cars I jacked, and then trying to avoid pedestrians which inevitably got the way and were splattered on my hood. Just surreal overall.

I have to hand it to the developers, though.. the amount of detail in this game is just beyond anything else I’ve ever seen. The whole world, NPCs and all is just amazing. Dialogues, radio selection in the car, damage to objects, object physics, locations, architecture, sunlight, etc.. very well designed and beautiful. Even what is said in the radio is original and funny.. there was this one ad on the radio that was about buying babies.. something about not having to wait 9 months.. babies.com or something like that.. I mean, someone sat there and recorded these thing should someone be at the right place and the right time and on the right radio channel. Weird.

Anyway, I’m glad I tried it out.. I just don’t see it being the game that will keep my attenti…
